PG Budget talks will stretch to the new year

It will take a little longer than expected to seal the City’s 2016 budget.

At tonight’s (Wednesday) budget meeting, Council decided more time is needed when it comes to making a decision on proposed enhancements to the RCMP that would cost $1.23 million.

Residents of PG will see their taxes increase by 3% for sure, but the number could end up higher after upcoming meetings.

The Finance and Audit Committee will start on the proposal at its December 14th meeting, but the enhancements could still be delayed after that.

More roadblocks appeared once Council dove into the City’s Capital Plan, as Councillor Jillian Merrick says more discussion is needed when it comes to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, and the CN Centre.

“With the Lheidli T’enneh Picnic Shelter it just seems like an expensive item for a fairly small recreation amenity. With the CN Centre, it’s directly related to essentially a private enterprise with the WHL. So I want to know what responsibility they have in paying for some of these items.”

The projects would combine to cost about $800,000.

“These items are still on the funded list for 2016, they’re moving forward for more discussion by Council and Administration to talk about the specifics,” says Mayor Hall. “We’re looking at probably December 14th (for the RCMP enhancements) and early January for a decision so we can move on.”

Hall says the budget will likely be finalized in February.
