Hartley Miller’s Hart Attack – December 4, 2015 Edition 552

Cut your losses and move on.

Jeff Tedford and the BC Lions were not a good fit.

The 7-11 record plus the post-season meltdown in Calgary was a reflection of a Lions team in turmoil.

Something had to be done even though Tedford was only head coach of the team for one season.

It appeared, fair or not, that Tedford related to the Lions players in a similar fashion as John Tortorella did in his one forgettable season with the Vancouver Canucks.

The 54-year-old Tedford officially resigned, realizing his services were no longer required, and that he was best suited to go back and find a job in the US College ranks.

Wally Buono, a four-time CFL coach of the year, who hasn’t coached since 2011, felt the pressure to return to the sidelines.

He is the most qualified for the position (with a regular season record of 254-154-3 and five Grey Cups as a coach) but the 65-year-old has had health concerns in the past.

Hopefully, the added stress of being head coach and GM won`t take a toll on his heart.

The Lions are mess and the sagging attendance figures, down nearly 7,000 a game, are an indication that fans want change.

Going back to Buono is a good start, but there is so much work ahead of him, one wonders if the responsibility isn’t too much for any man to handle, even one that is already a Canadian Football Hall of Famer.

Getting a quick jump on the opposition has been paramount to the Prince George Cougars early season success.

The Cougars have outscored the opposition 23-13 in the first period.

In other words, With 26 games complete, the 15-9-1-1 Cats are allowing an average just one goal against for every two games in the opening period.

Playing with the lead has been instrumental to the team’s improvement.

They have scored first in 16 games going 12-3-0-1 while allowing the first goal in just 10, where they are 3-6-1.

When the Cougars are ahead they generally shut the door on the opposition, sitting 12-1 when leading after 1 and 11-0 when up after 2.

In addition, P.G. has also not lost a one goal game in regulation with a 3-0-1-1 mark.

The Cougars are six points ahead of their pace from last season.

Currently, they are enjoying a six game point streak (5-0-0-1) and nine game home point streak (8-0-0-1).

It`s still too early to make a bold statement that the Cougars have turned the corner, but the culture is changing, and the team appears to be stronger mentally, which is a reflection of the team being six games above .500 for the first time in five years.

One can argue whether it was more of a Green Bay win or a Detroit loss but the Packers miracle last play hail Mary victory at Detroit, 27-23, was exceptional.

Who says NFL Thursday night football isn’t worth having?

Even though the odds were stacked against the Packers, down 20-0 in the 2nd half, great teams with superb quarterbacks like Green Bay, seem to win these type of memorable games while sad sack teams, like Detroit continue to find embarrassment in losing head-shakers.

Aaron Rodgers to tight end Richard Rodgers on a 61-yard bomb is an improbable ending, but the NFL Lions have become accustom to having a major blunder in the big moment.

Monday night, the Cleveland Browns lost to the Baltimore Ravens on a last play blocked field goal that was returned for the winning touchdown.

It can be debated which fan has had to endure more pain over the last several decades, the one cheering for the Lions or the one rooting for the Browns.

Since misery loves company, maybe fans of the Lions, Browns, Toronto Maple Leafs and others should form an association that helps to deal with the anguish and sports trauma of rooting for teams that constantly find new and creative ways to frustrate loyal supporters.
