Kamloops company eyeing part of park for housing development

A Kamloops development company is one step close to building new senior’s housing in PG.

The City has entered a contract to sell 4.7 acres of land in Ron Brent park to A&T Ventures, pending Council approval.

“The initial discussions started just over a year ago,” says Manager of Planning and Development, Ian Wells. “They looked at numerous sites in Prince George, but they liked the location and the amenities close to the downtown, the hospitals nearby, same with the Victoria Shopping Centre and medical clinic.”

For the past several months, the City has opened the conversation about more diverse housing for families and seniors, and Wells says this ties right in.

But the development isn’t a done deal yet.

“2.9 acres are already zoned, but 1.8 needs to be re-zoned. So the sale is subject to Council approval.”

The project would see 173 units built on the site, leaving 3.4 acres near Ron Brent Elementary as-is.

To see what people in the area had to say, the City held a public input meeting at Ron Brent earlier this week, and Wells says there were a lot of positives.

“They would see a nice new development in their neighbourhood, adding some value to the neighbourhood, there’s potential to improve the park that’s there, because right now it’s under-utilized. The school district doesn’t that area frequently either, so there’s a lot of opportunity to do some upgrades.”

As part of City Policy, all money from the sale of green space must go towards other parks.

Roughly thirty people turned out for the meeting, though people can still share their opinion with the City online.

The project is expected to cost around $30 million.
