PG Sports Weekend Wrap–Dec 11-13

The Prince George Cougars have won seven of their last eight games following a split in Portland. The Cats followed a 5-4 loss (Friday) with a 3-2 victory (Saturday). The 19-10-1-1 Cougars conclude a three game road trip Tuesday against the Thunderbirds in Seattle. The Thunderbirds are 11-1-1 at home and 18-10-2 overall. The Cougars host the Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday in their final action prior to Christmas. Prince George is just two points behind 2nd place Victoria in the B.C. Division and the Cats have a game in hand. The 20-10-1-1 Royals lost 4-2 Sunday against the last place Vancouver Giants.

The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars extended their win streak to four following a pair of victories, 8-2 Saturday and 3-1 Sunday over the (2-19-3) North Island Silvertips at Kin 1. The (15-6-3) Cougars have moved into second place in the BCMML. Cariboo will visit the (12-9-3) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday (4:45) and Sunday (10:00 a.m.) in Richmond. The Cougars head to the Mac’s tournament in Calgary over the Christmas holidays. Their next home action will be January 9th (4:30) and 10th (9:15 a.m.) at Kin 1 against the Vancouver NE Chiefs.

The Prince George based Northern Capitals finished with an overall 3-2 record and 6th place at the 16-team Mandi Schwartz Notre Dame female midget AAA hockey tournament in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. The Caps came 2nd in their pool with two wins and a loss before scoring a 1-0 triumph over the Saskatoon Stars followed by a 4-1 loss to Okanaagan Hockey Academy.

The Prince George Spruce Kings have lost their last three and 13 of their past 16 games. The (8-24-0-2) Spruce Kings, coming off Friday’s 6-1 loss to Chilliwack, play their next eight games on the road, three of them this week. They visit (22-11-0-1) Nanaimo Friday, (16-12-2-3) Cowichan Valley Saturday and (18-13-1) Langley Sunday. Their next home game isn’t until January 14th against Trail. The Spruce Kings are a whopping 15 points behind Coquitlam for the final playoff spot in the Mainland Division and both teams have played 34 games.

Megan Tandy of Prince George placed 48th in the women’s Biathlon World Cup 10-kilometre pursuit race in Hochfilzen, Austria. The 27-year-old Tandy also helped the Canadian women’s biathlon team to a 10th place finish in the 4×6 kilometre World Cup relay.

It was a strong weekend for the Duchess Park Condors in basketball. The Duchess Senior Boys went 3-1 at the GW Graham tournament in Chilliwack with their only loss 76-71 to St Thomas Moore, the top ranked AAA team in the province. The Duchess Senior Girls dominated the D.P. Todd tourney going 3-0, including a 104-39 victory over Cedars Christian in the final. The Duchess Junior Boys took top honors at the PGSS tournament, defeating D.P. Todd 65-55 in the final to finish 3-0.

PGSS whipped Caledonia in the final of the Smithers senior boys basketball tournament. Kelly Road knocked off College Heights 62-55 in the third place game.

The UNBC Timberwolves resume Canada West basketball action on January 8th and 9th when they host MacEwan University.
