Ice Oval hosts holiday skate

The Prince George Ice Oval is playing host to a holiday skate!

From noon to 3pm this afternoon, skaters can hit the ice for free, while enjoying a fire in the Canada Winter Games Cauldron, music, and free hot chocolate.

Ice Oval Society President Kathy Lewis says there’s also an opportunity to try something new.

“We just got some rental skates that we will be allowing people to try out. We will also have people around to help with sizing and showing people how to speedskate.”

The oval was briefly shuttered after a warm spell deteriorated ice conditions… But there’s nothing stopping it now!

As for speedskating tips?

“The most important one is just getting the basic position right,” adds Lewis. “Get nice and low, and make sure you push to the sides. It’s a little bit different than hockey skates, but otherwise it’s fairly similiar.”

The forecast is pointing to sun and clouds through the afternoon, with the temperature hanging around minus seven.
