PG Air trying to instil green habits in younger generations

A local group wants people to take a second look at their impact on air the City.

“Everyone know we have an air problem in the City of Prince George, and everybody seems to think it’s all industry-related,” says PG Air’s Dan Veller. “Industry is a fairly big portion of this, but we’ve put a lot of pressure on industry over the years, and it’s doing a better job.”

One of PG Air’s main goals is to reduce Fine Particulate Matter emissions from industry by 40% from the 1998 mark, and it’s on track to do so, as evidenced in a September City Council Meeting.

But more so than ever, Veller says this is about kids, and our legacy for the future.

“You look at kids, think about how big their lungs are… They’re about the size of your hand. They’re tiny! So a little tiny bit of pollution makes a really big difference,” explains Veller. “We’re going to leave them a better world, and hopefully we’re going to train them to say ‘Okay, these are things that we shouldn’t do, these are the things we need to do, let’s try to make the world better for everybody.”

While some of PG Air’s suggested solutions run a little more pricy, like replacing a hot-water tank with an on-demand system, many are as simple as carpooling, turning down the thermostat in favour of a thick sweater, or carpooling.
