Vipers sting Spruce Kings

The struggles of the Prince George Spruce Kings continued tonight (Wed) as they fell 6-3 to the Vernon Vipers.

Prince George struck first 5:55 into the opening period when Cooper Prechel buried a feed from Nic Ponak beating Vipers goalie Andrew Shortridge to make it 1-0.

Vernon would score the final two of the opening frame courtesy of Ben Butcher and Callum Volpe.

In the second, Stephen Penner evened the score for the Spruce Kings after ripping a wrist shot past Shortridge.

Mitchell Oliver put the visitors back in front at 10:03 while Christian Cakebread netted his first of two for a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Cakebread scored his second goal on the power-play at 3:35 of third period to make it 5-2 Vernon.

Nic Ponak lit the lamp for Prince George to cut the deficit but was later snuffed out after Ben Butcher potted his 10th to salt the victory.

Joseph McLeod made 30 saves in defeat while Andrew Shortridge saved 29 shots in the win for Vernon.

Vipers were 2 for 3 on the power-play.

Prince George was 1 for 5.

Next action for the Spruce Kings is Friday and Saturday against the Surrey Eagles at 7pm from the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
