BC sees slight drop in latest birth numbers

In 2012, just under 382,000 live births took place across the country, according to Stats Canada.

Analyst, Owen Phillips says while the national numbers were up, B.C. saw a slight drop.

“While we saw an increase in the numbers of births at the Canada level in 2012, the number of births in B.C. actually dropped to 44,008 compared to 44,129 the previous year.”

Phillips adds that most women in the province are waiting a little longer to expand their family.

“The average age per mother was 30.5 years in 2012 and that is up from 28.1 in 1992, both years were above the national average at 29.8 and 27.9 years in 1992.”

The total fertility rate in Canada for the same period was 1,614.2 live births per 1,000 females.

In 2012, 47% of all Canadian newborns were to mothers under 30.

In 1992, under 30 mothers made up 62% of births.
