PG Sports—Weekend Wrap (Feb 12-14)

The Prince George Cougars earned just one out of a possible four points after losing both ends of a doubleheader to the WHL leading Kelowna Rockets.

The Cougars fell 4-3 in overtime (Friday) and 6-4 (Saturday) which extended their losing streak to five games.

In the opener, Rourke Chartier of the Rockets scored with 1:10 left in the third and then completed the hat trick at 2:47 of overtime.

Tyson Baillie set up the OT winner and then the next night tallied a goal and two assists to give him 39 points in 34 career games against Prince George.

The (31-22-3-1) Cougars host the (35-18-1-2) Red Deer Rebels Friday and Saturday. The Rebels play Tuesday in Kelowna and Wednesday in Kamloops.

Prince George is 3rd in the B.C. Division, six points ahead of Kamloops, 13 behind Victoria and 15 back of Kelowna. Victoria had its points streak halted at 14 (13-0-1) when they lost 4-2 (Sunday) in Seattle.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings lost 4-1 to the Coquitlam Express (Sunday) in their final road game of the season. Earlier, P.G. dropped a pair in Wenatchee, 6-1 (Friday) and 3-2 (Saturday) in overtime.

The (12-37-4-1) Spruce Kings have four home games remaining: Thursday against the (29-21-3-1) Langley Rivermen, Friday vs. the (20-27-3-3) Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Feb 27th and 28th against the (7-43-0-2) Surrey Eagles.

–The Cariboo Cougars split their two games in North Vancouver against the third place Vancouver North West Giants. The Giants took the opener 8-4 (Saturday) before Cariboo came back with a 4-3 victory (Sunday).

The 27-8-3 Major Midget Cougars have won 16 of their last 18 games and will conclude their regular season on the road Feb 27th and 28th against the 4th place Okanagan Rockets.

–Cam McNamara won the 29th annual Prince George Iceman. The 32-year-old McNamara finished the cross country ski, 15km run, and swim in a time of 1:39:59, which was 33 seconds ahead of runner-up Michael Buchanan (1:40:32). Rob Vogt ended up 3rd in 1:42:44.

The female division was captured by Shar Balogh, who was 4th overall in 1:45:28.

A total of 568 participated, including 32 soloists and 115 teams.

Both UNBC Timberwolves basketball teams are 3-15. The Lady T-wolves won their final home game, 71-58 over the Mount Royal Cougars to earn a split. The Cougars took the opener 79-56.

The UNBC men lost to Mount Royal 76-75 and 87-80 to extend their losing streak to 11 games. In the opener, the Mount Royal men erased a 75-63 deficit with less than 2 1/2 minutes remaining by scoring the final 13 points.

The Timberwolves conclude their Canada West season with a pair of road games Friday and Saturday against MacEwan in Edmonton.

–Former professional soccer player Neil Sedgwick has been hired as head coach of the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team.

He replaces Andy Camerson who was let go after he coached the team for its first four CIS seasons.

Sedgwick comes to Prince George after working as the Director of Youth Development for EPIC Sport Management in Victoria.

–Duchess Park won the Jr Boys basketball district playdowns at Kelly Road slamming DP Todd in the final 56-28.

–Jim Cotter and his Vernon/Kelowna rink celebrated Valentine’s Day by winning the BC Men’s Curling Championship in Nelson, defeating Sean Geall of Royal City 7-6 in the final.

Cotter advances to the Brier for the 6th time. The Tim Hortons Brier will be held in Ottawa from March 5-13.

Other members of his rink are third Ryan Kuhn, 2nd Tyrel Griffith and lead Rick Sawatsky.
