City of Prince George shifts into spring street cleaning mode

It’s that time of year again! The City of Prince George is shifting into spring cleaning mode.

City crews will be turning their attention from snow removal to removing a winter’s worth of traction material from local streets.

City Director of Public Works Gina Layte Liston says this year’s spring street cleaning is starting a little ahead of schedule.

“What’s been happening in the last number of years is that the spring melt that we would usually have in March and April, we’re seeing in February and March now. Therefore the roads are drier and that dust is getting kicked up earlier in the year.”

Layte Liston says crews will be working to clean up the road dust as quickly as possible when air quality allows. Street sweeping is prohibited by city bylaws during air quality advisories. Layte Liston says residents also have a part to play in keeping the dust down.

“Something that’s really important for when residents are driving around is that they are driving in the travel lane and not in the shoulders. That can be where some of this dust and such is getting built up.”

Environment Canada has already issued two dust advisories for Prince George so far this year due, in part, to the amount of dust kicked up on dry roads.

Obeying street parking restrictions is another way in which locals can help the city with its spring spruce up.

“What residents can specifically do is make sure that they’re not parked on the streets. Up until April 15, we still have the winter parking restrictions in effect.”

Information on street sweeping operations and dust control bylaws can be found on the City’s website.
