BC government makes hunting with drones illegal

The Province is making amendments to Section 27 of the Wildlife Act, making it illegal to use a drone for hunting or trapping.

The government has deemed using one to scout or disturb animals an unfair advantage. The minimum fine for using one is $2,500, and can stretch up to $250,000 and two years in jail.

BC Wildlife Federation’s Director of Strategic Initiatives Al Martin supports the decision and is happy the government is being proactive.

“(Drones are) readily available in big box stores and online
and certainly, the government is just getting ahead of the general availability of this technology and the opportunity for them to use (them) for both hunting and harassment of wildlife.”

Other provinces like Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba have already banned hunters from using drones.
