Local winery to benefit from new trade agreement

BC wineries now have increased market access to Ontario and Quebec thanks to a new interprovincial trade agreement.

The new partnership will make it easier for customers to enjoy BC wine and increase the profile of products in the province.

Doug Bell with the Northern Lights Estate Winery believes it’s a golden opportunity for smaller wineries like theirs.

“We believe this a phenomenal opportunity for small and medium-sized wineries in our province because previously the market was very hard to reach due to the interprovincial tariff on wine crossing borders and we would like to see this trade agreement expand to other provinces.”

Modernizing liquor laws and increasing the flow of wine between provinces will support job opportunities within BC’s wine industry.

Bell also believes the general public could also give them a leg up.

“The other thing that we know as we continue to expand, there’s a lot of people that work and live in Prince George that have friends and neighbors in other provinces which will enable them to ship wine from the city and support us even more than they already have.”

The new export rules will support BC’s booming wine industry where producers can list their products with distributors in all three provinces.
