Prince George and BC enjoying steep decline in impaired driving incidents

The 2015 impaired driving report from Stats Canada was a bit of a mixed bag for BC and Prince George.

The national rate was 201 incidents per 100,000 in population while the BC rate came in slightly higher at 249.

Prince George fell somewhere in the middle according to Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics Kathy Aucoin.

“Prince George fell between the two numbers, so Prince George was less than the provincial average at 234 per 100,000 but was still higher than the national rate.”

Despite the findings, incidents involving impaired driving have gone down dramatically both locally and in the province. “When we look at BC, since 1986 they have reported a decline of 58% and in Prince George we have seen a 40% decrease since 2006,” says Aucoin.

Saskatchewan had the highest rate of police-reported impaired driving among the provinces in 2015.

There were 575 incidents per 100,000 population.
