PG Sports for Monday, Sept 15

The UNBC Timberwolves took it on the chin losing doubleheaders on the road against the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West Soccer. UNBC lost 3-0 (Sunday) and 5-1 (Saturday) in men’s action while the Lady Timberwolves dropped a pair to the Thunderbirds 3-0 (Sunday) and 5-0 (Saturday). The UNBC men are 1-3 and the Lady T-wolves sit 0-2-2 after four games. The UNBC soccer teams will play Canada West league games Friday and Saturday at Fraser Valley. The Timberwolves host Victoria September 27th and 28th at noon and 2:15pm.

–One week following the death of their teammate Nathan Warren, the Westwood Pub men’s soccer team won the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Open Division final.
Westwood Pub beat Rolling Mix Concrete 2-1 in the championship game. Warren died of a heart attack September 7th at age 26. In other Finals: Eden Spas/Geotech outscored Queensway Auto World 1-0 in the 30-plus Division and Subway doubled Caledonians 2-1 in the 45-plus Division.

–A draw and a win for the Spruce Capital Boxing Club on a pro fight card in Edmonton. 24-year-old Marcus Hume fought to a four round draw in his 135 pound lightweight professional debut against Mike McWilliams (2-0-1) of Ontario. 23-year-old Thomas Spiers improved his record to 1-0-1 with a four round unanimous decision victory over Ilis Anin of Montreal (0-1) in the 175 pound light heavyweight division. Both Hume and Spiers are coached by Wayne Sponagle.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings completed the pre-season with a 4-4 tie against the Vernon Vipers at the P.G. Coliseum. The Spruce Kings finished 0-2-1-1 in exhibition play. They start the regular season against Nanaimo Saturday in Chilliwack with their home opener October 3rd against Chilliwack.

–The Spruce Kings roster sits at 23 (two goalies, seven defencemen and 14 forwards).

–The Prince George Cougars finished pre-season play with a 3-0-2 record after that 4-3 overtime loss in Kamloops. The Cougars regular season starts Saturday in Portland with the Cats home opener Friday, Sept 26th against Kelowna.

–The P.G Cougars have 29 players on their roster (3 goalies, 10 defencemen and 16 forwards). On the injured list are David Soltes and Raymond Grewal.
