PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The WHL regular season begins with eight games on Friday.

All BC Division teams will play on opening night.

The Prince George Cougars are home against the Spokane Chiefs, 7PM at the CN Centre in the first of a double-header.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The (3-0-0-1) Prince George Spruce Kings have outscored their opponents 22-8 and are one of five BCHL teams that have not lost in regulation time.

The Spruce Kings play Merritt Friday and Victoria Saturday at the league showcase in Chilliwack.

The Vernon Vipers lead the BCHL at 4-0.

 

NHL EXHIBITION:

The Minnesota Wild and their captain Mikko Koivu have come to terms on a two-year, $11 million contract extension.

The 34-year-old notched 58 points (18G, 40A) to go along with a plus-27 rating in 80 games last season.

The Vancouver Canucks have four pre-season games in as many days this week; two in Alberta and two in China.

The Canucks visit the Calgary Flames Wednesday.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves are back in action this weekend in Canada West Soccer.

The 2-2 UNBC women will host Trinity Western Friday night at 6PM and Fraser Valley Sunday at Noon.

The 2-3-3 UNBC men will visit MacEwan Saturday and Lethbridge Sunday afternoon.

 

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL:

The Detroit Lions beat the New York Giants 24-10 in Monday night NFL action.

The Lions are one of eight NFL teams at 2-0 along with the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers, the Denver Broncos, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Baltimore Ravens.

The Giants are one of nine teams at 0-2.

The others are the New York Jets, the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Indianapolis Colts, the Los Angeles Chargers, the Chicago Bears, the New Orleans Saints, and the San Francisco 49ers.

On average, only 12% of teams that begin the season 0-2 make the playoffs.

 

CFL:

The 6-6 BC Lions are two-thirds of the way through their CFL regular season schedule.

The Lions, sitting last in the West, host the 2-9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday.

The Ti-Cats have the worst record in the league.

 

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The Toronto Blue Jays begin a six-game home-stand tonight when they entertain the 73-76 Kansas City Royals.

The 70-80 Jays have just a dozen games left in their season.

After Monday’s MLB action, the Minnesota Twins lead the second American League wild card spot by one-and-a-half games over the Los Angeles Angels and by four over Seattle.

The Colorado Rockies lead the second wild card in the National League by two games over Milwaukee.
