Local mounties issue almost 300 school zone speeding tickets

In the first two weeks of the new school year, the Prince George RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Services Section issued double the amount of speeding tickets this year compared to 2016.

Nearly 300 tickets were handed out by patrol officers in the 37 Prince George and surrounding community schools from 8AM to 5PM.

A total of eight drivers were written up for excessive speeding, including one for driving 65 kilometres above the 30-kilometre limit, and all had their vehicles impounded as a result.

More tickets were issued for the following:

  • 17 = Seatbelt tickets
  • 2 = Cell-phone tickets
  • 2 = Intersection-related violations
  • 1 = 24-hour suspension for drugs
  • 42 = Various tickets under Motor Vehicle Act

“This is not safe for children,” says RCMP Sergeant Matt LaBelle.

“We will continue to enforce speed limits in areas where children are vulnerable.”

Police are reminding the public that speeding in school and playground zones is dangerous, especially when children are walking nearby, and there’s no exception for going above the 30-kilometre limit.

If you see a traffic violation, or a vehicle speeding through a school zone, you’re asked to call the Prince George RCMP at (250) 561-3300.
