HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22

The Prince George Spruce Kings scored late in the second and early in the third to post a come from behind 4-3 victory over the (0-6) Merritt Centennials today at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack.

Jarod Hovde notched the winner to help the (4-0-0-1) Spruce Kings stretch their winning streak to four games.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Opening night and the raising of the banner arrives this evening for the Prince George Cougars, who begin the 52nd WHL season by hosting the Spokane Chiefs.

The Cougars are carrying an over-sized roster of 29 players, including three goalies, 16 forwards and 10 defencemen.

All five BC Division teams are in action tonight; Kamloops plays in Kelowna, and Victoria hosts Vancouver.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings play twice at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack.

The 3-0-0-1 Prince George Spruce Kings face the winless Merritt Centennials (0-5) this morning at 10AM and the 2-2 Victoria Grizzlies Saturday afternoon at 4PM.

The Spruce Kings have won three straight and have outscored the opposition 22-8 in their four games.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Major Midget hockey season opens for the Cariboo Cougars at Kin 1.

The defending BC-champion Cougars host the Valley West Hawks Saturday at 4PM and Sunday at 10AM.

Cariboo plays 16 of its first 22 games on home ice.

 

NHL EXHIBITION:

In the first NHL game played in China, the Los Angeles Kings beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-2 in pre-season action.

The announced attendance in Shanghai was 10,088 in an arena that holds 18,000.

The same two teams play again Saturday morning, 12:30AM Pacific in Beijing.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

There’s Canada West soccer in Prince George this weekend.

The 2-2 UNBC Lady Timberwolves host Trinity Western (2-2) tonight at 6PM and Fraser Valley (1-2-1) Sunday at Noon.

The 2-3-3 UNBC men’s soccer team will play in Alberta Saturday at MacEwan (1-5) and Sunday at the University of Lethbridge (1-5-2).

 

CFL:

There’s a pair of Friday night games in the CFL to begin week 14.

The 6-6 BC Lions host the 2-9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which follows the early game of 5-7-1 Ottawa at 8-3 Winnipeg.

 

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL:

The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers combined for 80 points with the Rams coming out on top 41-39 in the NFL’s Thursday night game.

The Rams are 2-1, while the 49ers sit 0-3.

 

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The Toronto Blue Jays had just two hits in a 1-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals in the rubber match of their three-game series.

The 71-82 Blue Jays host the New York Yankees this weekend in their final three home games of the season.

The Yankees are in a wild card playoff spot and three games behind the American League-East leading Boston Red Sox.
