Timely goals by Spartans down UNBC women’s soccer

Rachel Hutchinson did her best David Beckham impression against the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team on Friday.

The third-year Cloverdale product provided the insurance marker for the Trinity Western Spartans (TWU) in the second half leading an offensive rush, cutting into the middle and bent the ball into the corner of the net, beating T-Wolves goalkeeper Brooke Molby to cap off a 3-0 victory.

“We work on those in practice so it was good to finally finish one even though I have a little bit of inconsistency in the past couple of games but I am happy to finish one.”

The visitors got on the board in the opening half on a corner kick, which deflected off of Jenaya Robertson.

UNBC had a golden opportunity to even the game before half-time when TWU goalkeeper Christina Oliverio turned it over outside the box to Paige Payne who booted it directly off the crossbar.

“We had a little bit of momentum going from there but then the whistle blew for half and we had to get ready again but it was unfortunate we couldn’t bury before,” said Tianna Pius, Timberwolves midfielder.

She adds the team needs to do a better job of executing their game plan for the full 90 minutes.

“The biggest thing we need to work is our own game and basically we are making it harder on ourselves than we need to be – we just need to make sure we are making quality passes and concentrating on our side of things.”

The Timberwolves drop to 2-3 on the season while Trinity Western improves to 3-2.

UNBC will play its final regular-season home game on Sunday at Noon from the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League fields against the Fraser Valley Cascades.

It will be the final one for Pius and fellow fifth-year players Tianna Rossi, Rhianne Ferdinandi and Fiona Raymond.

Pius says the team will leave it all on the field once again.

“We’re excited to get on and show Prince George what we have to compete with and honestly all the girls are ready and roaring. I don’t think we go into a game thinking that can’t possibly win this game, we’re going to make it happen.”

The UNBC men’s soccer team begins its two-game Alberta road trip Saturday against the MacEwan Griffins and will conclude the stretch on Sunday with the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
