The UNBC women’s basketball team begins pre-season action with three home games this week. The Lady Timberwolves entertain Trinity Western Thursday at 8pm and Friday at 6pm plus Grande Prairie Sunday at 10am at the Northern Sport Centre. The UNBC men start exhibition play October 2nd in Edmonton. The Timberwolves open their regular season with home games against TRU Nov 7th and 8th.
–The UNBC basketball teams played their annual Alumni games. The UNBC men beat the former Timberwolves 103-85 but in women’s action, the UNBC Alumni outscored this season’s edition of the Lady Timberwolves 61-50.
–The UNBC Timberwolves are half-way thru their Canada West soccer schedule. UNBC is 1-5 in the men’s standings and 0-4-2 in the women’s division. The Timberwolves host the Victoria Vikes Saturday and Sunday at noon and 2:15pm.
–The 1-1 Prince George Cougars play their next three games at CN Centre starting with their home opener Friday against the 1-0 Kelowna Rockets.
–Defenceman Marc McNulty is back with the P.G. Cougars as he was returned to junior by the Detroit Red Wings.
–A major trade in the WHL. The Saskatoon Blades sent Nikita Scherbak, a Montreal Canadiens first round draft pick this year, to the Everett Silvertips in return for goalie Nik Amundrud, a first-round draft pick in the 2015 WHL bantam draft and a second-round selection in the 2016 draft. Last season with the Blades, the 18-year-old Scherbak scored 28 goals and added 50 assists in 65 games, leading the team in scoring.
–Mark Ferner has stepped down as an assistant coach with the Kamloops Blazers to join the Vernon Vipers as GM/Head Coach.
–The 2-0 Prince George Spruce Kings play three road games in their Mainland Division this weekend. The Spruce Kings visit Coquitlam Friday and Saturday and Surrey Sunday. Their home opener is set for October 3rd against Chilliwack.
–The 2-0 Major Midget Cariboo Cougars have their first league road games of the season as they visit the Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday (9:30am) and Sunday (8:30am). The Cariboo Cats next home games will be against the Vancouver Greater Canadians Oct 4 (4:45pm) and 5 (11:30am) at Kin 1.
