PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Tavin Grant of the Prince George Cougars is the WHL Goaltender of the Week following a shutout performance in Portland.

The 19-year-old stopped 47 shots in leading the Cougars to their first win of the season, 3-0 over the Winterhawks.

The 1-3 Cougars play the 0-5 Blazers Wednesday in Kamloops before returning for five straight games at the CN Centre.

 

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

BC DIVISION STANDINGS:

Victoria = 4-0
Kelowna = 2-0-0-1
Vancouver = 1-2
Prince George = 1-3
Kamloops = 0-5

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Spruce Kings play their next three games on home ice starting with a doubleheader against the 2-5-1-1 Surrey Eagles Friday and Saturday.

The 5-3-1-0 Spruce Kings are 2-1 against Surrey this season.

Prince George leads the Mainland Division by one point over the 3-1-4 Langley Rivermen.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The 1-2-1 Cariboo Cougars will be home on the long weekend as they entertain the Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday at 4PM and Sunday at 10AM at Kin 1.

Greater Vancouver is one of three BCMML teams with a perfect 4-0 record.

 

NHL:

Jaromir Jagr will continue his pursuit of 800 goals in a Calgary Flames uniform.

The 45-year-old, who has scored 765 times in the NHL, signed a one-year, $1-million deal plus incentives with the Flames.

He came to terms with Calgary after turning down an offer from the St. Louis Blues.

Jagr notched 46 points (16G, 30A) in 82 games last season with the Florida Panthers.

The curtain opens on the NHL season with four games on Wednesday including Calgary at Edmonton and Toronto at Winnipeg.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves are in playoff contention in Canada West (CW) Soccer.

The 4-5-3 UNBC men are fifth out of seven in the Pacific Division where the top four teams advance to the post-season.

The 2-5-1 Lady Timberwolves are sixth out of eight, however, the top six in the CW women’s Pacific Division qualify for the playoffs.

The UNBC men have four games left (two on the road, two at home) while the UNBC women have six remaining (all on the road).

 

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:

The Duchess Park Condors won their third consecutive Senior Boys volleyball tournament of the season by taking top honors at the Jon Bragg Invitational.

The Condors outscored host College Heights in the final 26-24, 25-18.

Duchess is #2 and College Heights #4 in the Provincial AA rankings.

Centennial Christian, Bulkley Valley Christian, and DP Todd all tied for 3rd in the seven-team tournament followed by Kelly Road and PGSS.

 

NFL:

Kansas City Chiefs             29             Washington Redskins    20

Chiefs rookie kicker Harrison Butker booted a 43-yard field goal with four seconds left in his first career game to snap a 20-20 tie.

Kansas City added a touchdown on the game’s final play.

The Chiefs are 4-0 and the only unbeaten team in the NFL.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will be sidelined two-to-six weeks due to a fracture in his back.

Carr was injured in the Raiders 16-10 loss Sunday in Denver.

CFL:

With five weekends left in the CFL regular season, the 6-7 BC Lions are last in the West Division, but just two points behind both the 7-6 Saskatchewan Roughriders and the 7-6 Edmonton Eskimos.

The Lions end a two-week break when they host 5-9-1 Ottawa on Saturday.

 

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The MLB playoffs open tonight with the American League wild-card game.

The Minnesota Twins visit the New York Yankees with the winner to face the Cleveland Indians in a best of five series.

The National League wild-card game will be played Wednesday in Arizona between the Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies.
