The Surrey Eagles stole two points from the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) on Friday escaping with a 3-2 overtime win over the Prince George Spruce Kings.
Johnny Wesley’s seeing eye shot went straight up into the air after getting blocked by Spruce Kings defenceman Chays Ruddy and touched down just in time to hand-cuff Prince George netminder Brad Cooper.
It was a game full of missed opportunities, according to Spruce Kings Head Coach Adam Maglio.
“I think we had our fair share of chances to capitalize and we didn’t have that killer instinct to put one through the back of the net and that consistency through the game hurt us.”
Surrey drew first blood in the opening period with a pair of goals from Ty Westgard and Jesse Nelson to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Kyle Johnson evened the scored midway through the middle frame on a nice three-way passing play involving Layton Ahac and Jarod Hovde.
Prince George had plenty of chances to pull away from the Eagles, but could not beat Daniel Davidson and later failed to score on a four-minute power-play in the third period.
“We put a lot of shots in the green team’s shin pads tonight, we have to do a better job of finding lanes and especially to find the net on grade A chances,” added Maglio.
Davidson recorded 29 saves in the win for Surrey while Cooper made 24 saves in defeat for the Spruce Kings.
Despite the loss, Prince George remains two points up for the top spot in the Mainland Division over the Langley Rivermen and four points ahead of the Eagles.
Both teams have become very familiar with each other in a short time span, playing four times to begin the 2017-18 BCHL season with both teams splitting the first four games.
Cariboo Cougars defenceman Brennan Malgunas suited up for Prince George as an affiliated player due to the trade of 20-year-old Nick Sutter to the Drumheller Dragons on Thursday.
The fifth matchup takes place on Saturday, 7PM from the RMCA.
