Roy relishing playoff possibility with Timberwolves

Sidney Roy and the rest of the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team are so close to the Canada West playoffs they can taste it.

The 3-7-2 T-Wolves enter the final weekend of the regular season with a one point lead over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, whom they will play Saturday in Kamloops.

The formula is simple for UNBC, win and you’re in.

Roy came back to the Timberwolves after not playing last season.

The fourth-year player from Burnaby thinks this year’s squad should relish the opportunity of punching their ticket to the postseason.

“I think everyone is excited, obviously this is the biggest game that we have had in any UNBC women’s soccer game ever and I think everyone is excited to have that extra pressure and we’re going to show why we deserve to be here.”

UNBC took a big step in cementing their playoff positioning after a four point weekend in Winnipeg, which included a 1-0 victory over the Manitoba Bisons and 0-0 draw against the Winnipeg Wesmen.

Roy came up clutch during the two game set, scoring the only goal for the Timberwolves, which proved to be the game-winner against the Bisons.

However, the turning point in their season may have come in Vancouver on October 1st when UNBC earned a 1-1 draw against perennial powerhouse UBC Thunderbirds.

Roy says that result proved they could compete with some of the higher-calibre clubs and also gave them some much-needed confidence.

“Any points you grab from those top four teams is huge, especially now when you look at the standings and that point gave us the edge we have over TRU right now so it was huge for us.”

The Timberwolves earned a season-opening 3-0 over the Wolfpack at home on September 8th.

Kickoff is slated for 12 PM.

UNBC wraps up the regular season on Sunday in Kelowna against UBC Okanagan.
