Outdoor Skating Rink Opens Today

Due to the weather pattern we’ve been experiencing in Prince George, the Outdoor Oval will be opening today.

President of the Outdoor Ice Oval Society Kathy Lewis says to get the rink up and running takes a lot of work.

“It takes usually two people on each fire hose and each flood probably takes about an hour of standing out there and flooding by hand. We do that for about five to six to seven days. It kind of depends on how much ice we can put down at one time.”

The skating rink has been a growing trend in the community said Lewis.

“I think we gained a lot of notice as part of the Canada Winter Games. We were hosting the long track speed skating and although the speed skating venue had to move up to Fort St. John, because our oval got to soft, we did have one day of racing.”

She says with the way the weathers been it might be a short opening, but they hope to keep the oval open as much as possible.
