Cougars name Dennis Cholowski as 23rd captain

The Prince George Cougars have named their new leadership group.

Dennis Cholowski has been announced as the 23rd captain in team history, with Josh Anderson and Brogan O’Brien as alternate captains.

Cholowski, the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft by Detroit, is playing his first season in the Western Hockey League and leads all Cougars defencemen in points.

“It was one of my goals coming in and being able to be the captain is an extreme honour,” says Cholowski.

“[Anderson and O’Brien] are great guys and having them on the leadership crew is going to help me out a lot.”

The Langley, B.C., native has six goals and 17 points on the year and recently played for Team WHL in the Canada/Russia Series.

20-year-old O’Brien is a local product, born in PG, and is in his last season with the team.

During his three-year career with the Cougars, O’Brien has scored 34 goals and 100 points in 162 regular season games.

“It’s special, being from here, having the opportunity to play for my hometown team and now to wear a letter,” O’Brien explains.

“The leadership group goes way past us three, as there’s older guys in our room who share big roles as well, and even the young guys have done their part.”

Anderson has been with the Cougars organization for four years, compiling six goals, 24 points, and 224 penalty minutes in 160 career regular season games.

He was selected in the third round, 71st overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2016 NHL Draft.

“Brogan, Dennis, and Josh have earned the respect from the coaching staff and their teammates that comes with being leaders,” says Head Coach Richard Matvichuk.

“They’re willing to put personal accolades aside for the betterment of the team, and their passion for the game and our group is exactly what we’re looking for in leaders.”

Prince George will have a third alternate captain on a rotating basis.
