The Governor General’s History Awards recognize excellence in teaching across Canada.
This year, Prince George managed to send two recipients to accept the honour.
The Exploration Place is being recognized for it’s Hodul’eh-a: A Place of Learning gallery, highlighting the history of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation.
“This honour, shared with our friends from the Lheidli T’enneh Nation, is humbling. By creating Hodul’eh-a: A Place of Learning, we are re-establishing a space in the heart of the Lheidli traditional territory to both learn and teach this generation and tomorrow’s leaders,” says The Exploration Place CEO Tracy Calogheros in a statement.
“To have our country celebrate this decades-long friendship by bestowing this award upon us means more than I can succinctly express in English, so I will use a Dakelh word to express the depth of our gratitude: Snachailya.”
D.P. Todd Secondary School teacher Glen Thielmann also took home the award for work with the Skookum Stories project, which gets students to look at their own histories and cultures.
Each award comes with a $2,500 prize for the recipient, with Thielmann earning an extra $1,000 for D.P. Todd.
