Rockets take off at Cougars expense

The Prince George Cougars losing streak has reached a season high four games.

The Kelowna Rockets built up period leads of 3-0 and 5-1 and they went on to a 5-3 victory over the Cougars before 4,454 fans at Prospera Place.

Carsen Twarynski notched a hat trick to lead the Rockets who are 4-0 against the Cougars this season.

Kelowna has won the last eight meetings against Prince George dating back to last season.

Josh Curtis with a shorthanded effort in the second, and Jared Bethune and Dennis Cholowski, with late power play goals, tallied for the 9-13-2-2 Cougars.

Cholowski extended his points streak to seven games.

Isiah DiLaura, in just his second WHL start, took the loss in net as each team had 29 shots.

“Right from the drop of the puck tonight (Wednesday) Kelowna outworked us, said Cougars coach Richard Matvichuk on the 94.3 the Goat post-game show.

“You have to find a way to compete and we are not doing it for 60 minutes.  You have to find a way to dislike your opponent knowing they are in the way of something you are trying to do. Quite frankly you have to hate to lose. That bitter taste of losing is more important than the fun of winning. It’s a big difference and that’s what we have to find a way.”

The loss keeps the Cougars last in the BC Division, two points behind the Kamloops Blazers and four back of the Vancouver Giants.

The Blazers beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 Wednesday night in Kamloops on a goal with 29 seconds left in the third period from Jermaine Loewen.

Dorrin Luding of Prince George, a recent cut of the Everett Silvertips, was in net for Seattle stopping 31 of 35 shots.

The Cougars start December with five straight games at the CN Centre.

They host the Giants Friday and Saturday.
