PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Victoria Royals             5      Prince George Cougars      4    (OT)

18-year-old Josh Maser of Houston scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal at 13:41 of the first period and finished with his first WHL hat trick, but the Cougars blew a 3-0 lead after two periods and had to settle for the single point.

Royals captain Matthew Phillips scored his second goal of the game, and his team leading 23rd of the season at 1:55 of overtime, before a Prince George crowd of 4,175.

Winning goalie Griffen Outhouse picked up an assist on the OT goal as Prince George out-shot Victoria 34-29.

Taylor Gauthier suffered the loss in net.

Jackson Leppard tallied in the second period for the Cats, his first goal in a month (11 games).

The Royals tied the game 4-4 when Dino Kambeitz scored with just 4:48 left in the third period.

Brogan O’Brien notched two assists before he left the game in the third period with a leg injury after he took a knee-on-knee hit at the Victoria blue-line.

Kade Jensen was given a major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit.

Maser, O’Brien, and Outhouse are all former Cariboo Cougars.

Prince George went three-for-four on the power play, while Victoria was one-for-seven with the man advantage.

The two teams play again Tuesday at the CN Centre in the Cougars final home game in 2017.

The 11-14-3-2 Cougars are two points behind Kamloops and three back of Seattle in the chase for the final wild card playoff spot.

The 20-10-3 Royals lead the BC Division by four points over Kelowna, although the Rockets have three games in hand.

The Prince George Spruce Kings beat the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 4-1 (Friday) and the Wenatchee Wild 4-3 (Saturday) to stretch their win streak to six games and finish 7-1 on an eight game home-stand.

The 18-10-2-3 Spruce Kings are just a point behind first place Langley in the Mainland Division and Prince George has two games in hand,

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars have won 16 of their last 18 games after a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Thompson Blazers; 6-4 Saturday and 9-0 Sunday.

Hunter Floris of Vanderhoof scored four goals and added two assists for the 17-4-1 Cougars, who are just two points behind the 18-3-1 Valley West Hawks in the race for first place.

The Blues have lost their second leading scorer, Jaden Schwartz, for at least six weeks due to a right ankle injury.

Schwartz has 35 points (14 goals) in 30 games and he’s a plus 23.

The 14-12-4 Vancouver Canucks, coming off Saturday’s 4-2 loss in Calgary, visit the 17-8-5 Winnipeg Jets tonight to conclude a two-game mini road trip.

The Canucks are 5th in the Pacific Division, but they are just a point out of a wild-card spot.

The Jets are 3rd in the Central Division.

 

NFL:

The 11-2 Eagles clinched top spot in the NFC East but quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a torn ACL which will keep him out for the rest of the season.

Jags improve to 9-4 while the Seahawks slip to 8-5, a game behind the 9-4 Rams in the NFC West.

Panthers are 9-4, tied with New Orleans for top spot in the NFC South, a game ahead of 8-5 Atlanta.

The 10-3 Vikings have a three game lead in the NFC North.

The 11-2 Steelers scored the final 10 points of the game to clinch the AFC North.

Monday night football to wrap up week 14 of the NFL season has 10-2 New England at 5-7 Miami.

 

CURLING:

Kevin Koe of Calgary and Rachel Homan of Ottawa will represent Canada in curling at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Koe beat Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen 7-6 in the men’s final of the Roar of the Rings while Homan got by Calgary’s Chelsea Carey 6-5 in the women’s final.

 

NBA:

The 17-7 Raptors continue a four-game road trip tonight when they visit the 9-15 LA Clippers.

Toronto, riding a six-game win streak, is the 3rd highest scoring team in the NBA behind Golden State and Houston.

 

MLS:

Toronto is the first Canadian team to win the MLS Cup.

This was the second straight season the championship game was played in Toronto between the same two clubs.
