Local Wood Stove Exchange Program to see a reduction of rebate spots in 2018

The Wood Stove Exchange Program offered by the Prince George Air Improvement Roundtable (PGAIR) will return in 2018.

PG AIR Coordinator Danielle Patterson says anyone who trades in their old smokey woodstove for a new emissions one is in line for a lot of savings.

“Eligible recipients can receive $500 rebates for wood stove upgrades and now up to $650 for natural gas or pellet upgrades but we do have just over 30 rebate spots available,” says Danielle Patterson, PGAIR Coordinator.

“This year the province is focusing on giving funding on giving money to education and promotion rather than new rebates,” added Patterson.

The project has also provided a positive impact on the city’s air quality.

“I think the fact we have been able to run this for about ten years speaks to how successful the program has been and in this last year, so far to date, exchanges have helped reduce the amount particulate matter in the air by over one-point-five tonnes and is having an enormous impact on the local airshed.”

“A lot of people really enjoy their wood stoves and I know they love the ambience of them or perhaps is their only source of heat. What this really does is help reduce the amount of fine particulate matter in the air and that really has impacts on people who have asthma or COPD or any other health concerns, which can pass into the lungs. What this does is clear the local airshed and as we all know, Prince George has a bit of a bowl and things can get trapped in that bowl.”

Participants who require a Heating Unit Permit can have their $130 permit fee waived.
