Over 200 students are taking part in this years College of New Caledonia’s (CNC) Regional Skills Competition and Trades Day.

This provides an opportunity for students from elementary schools, high schools and CNC to participate in a number of different skills in categories like automotive, robotics and woodwork.

Director of Operations for Skills BC Rene Ragetli says the amount of people who have taken part in this event has grown over the years.

“What is here today, and will be roughly 200 or so competitors, didn’t exist four years ago the skills competition that existed previously were much smaller.”

He added people have now become more passionate about the trades and it really shows in the work they do.

“They[students] get to design and build and test something and you know a project that’s real worldish. It’s fun, hands on learning. They get to do it in a post secondary that maybe they’ve never been in before.”

The winners from this regional competitions will go on to provincials, and if they dominate in that, they head to nationals.
