SKI CROSS:

Tiana Gairns of Prince George has been named a women’s alternate for the Canadian team that will compete in ski cross at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Ski-cross will be held February 21st to 23rd.

The 19-year-old posted a sixth place finish in her first World Cup race that was held Saturday in Nakiska, Alberta.

 

SNOWBOARD:

The Canadian Snowboardcross team will compete in Bansko, Bulgaria this week in a sprint Snowboardcross World Cup event.

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George and partner Zoe Bergermann of Erin, Ontario are coming off a bronze medal performance in a World Cup team race in Erzurum, Turkey.

Individually, the 20-year-old O’Dine is eighth in the world standings.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The NHL Central Scouting midterm rankings have Prince George Cougars left winger Jackson Leppard listed 95th among North American skaters.

Leppard has 24 points (11G, 13A) in 45 games this season.

Prince George Spruce Kings leading scorer Ethan de Jong (15G, 30A) through 39 games this year is ranked 154th.

De Jong is one of 10 BCHL players that will compete in the CJHL Prospects Game tonight in Mississauga. Ont.

The 2018 NHL Draft will be held June 22nd and 23rd in Dallas.

The Prince George Cougars start a six-game Prairie road trip Friday in Prince Albert.

The 18-23-4-3 Cougars are two points behind Kamloops in the BC Division and eight points behind the Spokane Chiefs, who hold down the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings have 13 regular season games left; eight on the road and five at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

Prince George is tied with Surrey for first in the Mainland Division, two points in front of Langley.

The 23-14-4-4 Spruce Kings play Friday in Langley, Saturday in Coquitlam, and Sunday in Chilliwack.

The 21-5-2 Major Midget Cougars, with 12 regular season games left, visit the last place (3-22-3) South Island Royals Friday and Saturday afternoon in Victoria.

The UNBC Timberwolves are in 10th place with an 8-10 record in both the men’s and women’s divisions in Canada West basketball; the top 12 make the playoffs.

The Timberwolves host the University of the Fraser Valley Friday (UFV) and Saturday to conclude their regular season.

UFV Cascades are is 5-11 (men) and 6-10 (women).

 

HIGH JUMP:

High Jumper Alyx Treasure of Prince George is one of 46 athletes that will represent Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games which run April 4th to 15th in Australia.

Treasure, a four-time national champion, is ranked 18th in the world.

 

NFL:

A couple of NFL teams filled their head coaching vacancy on Monday.

The Arizona Cardinals signed 48-year-old Carolina Panthers defensive co-ordinator Steve Wilks to a four-year contract.

Meanwhile, Minnesota Vikings offensive co-ordinator Pat Shurmur has taken over as head coach of the New York Giants.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the biggest Super Bowl underdogs in nine years.

The New England Patriots are five-and-a-half point favourites to win their second straight and sixth overall Super Bowl February 4th in Minneapolis.

The betting favourite has won 33 of the previous 51 Super Bowls.

 

NBA:

The Milwaukee Bucks have sacked head coach Jason Kidd and replaced him on an interim basis with assistant coach Joe Prunty.

The Bucks beat Phoenix 109-105 Monday night in their first game since the change.

Kidd was 139-152 over three-plus seasons with Milwaukee.

The 31-14 Toronto Raptors resume action Wednesday in Atlanta against the 14-32 Hawks.
