First Nations Court coming to Prince George

A First Nations Court will be in Northern BC for the first time ever, as announced by Provincial Court Chief Judge, Thomas J. Crabtree.

Prince George will be the home of it, sitting monthly at the Prince George courthouse beginning in April.

This is the sixth First Nations Court in the province.

The initiative to make this a reality was started by the Indigenous Court working group in PG, who worked with the Provincial Court to develop a court process to address the overrepresentation of Indigenous people involved in the criminal justice system.

A First Nations Court, according to a release from the Provincial Court, is a sentencing court providing an Indigenous perspective based on a holistic and restorative approach for First Nations persons who acknowledge responsibility for their criminal offences.

An opening ceremony will take place March 23rd.
