2018 WINTER OLYMPICS:

Jamie Macdonald of Fort St. James has been named to Canada’s 10-member Olympic short-track speed-skating team.

The 23-year-old will compete in the 500-metre race and in the women’s relay.

Macdonald has been a member of the senior national team since 2015.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars are on the road for a six-game Prairie trip that starts Friday in Prince Albert against the (18-20-7-2) Raiders and continues Saturday in Saskatoon against the (23-23-2-1) Blades.

They will also play at Swift Current Tuesday, Regina Wednesday, Brandon (Friday, February 2nd) and Moose Jaw (Saturday, February 3rd).

The Cougars next home games are February 9th and 10th against Kamloops.

The 18-23-4-3 Cougars are 10 points behind the Tri-City Americans for the final wild-card playoff spot.

The Prince George Spruce Kings have 13 regular season games left; eight on the road and five at the RMCA.

(12 are against their own division)

Prince George is tied with Surrey for first in the Mainland Division, two points in front of Langley.

The 23-14-4-4 Spruce Kings play Friday in Langley, Saturday in Coquitlam, and Sunday in Chilliwack.

The Cariboo Cougars head to Victoria to play the last place (3-22-3) South Island Royals Friday and Saturday afternoon.

The 21-5-2 Major Midget Cougars are just two points behind the (22-4-2) Valley West Hawks in the race for first place in the BCMML.

 

NHL:

Tanner Pearson scored with 26.1 seconds left in overtime.

Toronto          3   Chicago  2   (OT)

William Nylander scored on a penalty shot six seconds into overtime.

The 19-23-6 Vancouver Canucks, sitting 13 points out of playoff spot, host the 13-26-9 Buffalo Sabres tonight.

The Sabres are second last in the overall standings, just two points ahead of Arizona.

The NHL has suspended Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand five games for elbowing New Jersey Devils forward Marcus Johansson.

It is the sixth time in his career that Marchand has been suspended.

Johansson has been diagnosed with a concussion.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves host the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (UFV) to wrap up their regular season in Canada West basketball.

Games at the Northern Sport Centre run Friday night at 6 and 8 and Saturday night at 5 and 7.

The Timberwolves are in 10th place with an 8-10 record in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

The top 12 make the playoffs.

The Cascades are is 5-11 (men) and 6-10 (women).

The 32-14 Raptors are second in the Eastern Conference, one-and-a-half games behind the 35-14 Celtics.

 

AUSTRALIAN OPEN:

The top two seeds, Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki have advanced to the women’s final at the Australian Open.

The winner will earn a first Grand Slam title and the No. 1 ranking in the world.

In the semis, the top-seeded Halep edged Angelique Kerber 6-3, 4-6, 9-7 while Wozniacki beat Elise Mertens 6-3, 7-6.

 

MLB:

Former Montreal Expos slugger Vladimir Guerrero is among four players voted to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Others  going to Cooperstown in the Class of 2018 are slugger Jim Thome, switch hitter Chipper Jones and closer Trevor Hoffman.

 

NFL:

The New England Patriots initial injury report ahead of the Super Bowl has tight end Rob Gronkowski listed with a concussion.

This marks the first time the Patriots have acknowledged that Gronkowski sustained a concussion in the AFC championship game.
