PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars started their six-game Prairie road trip picking up just one out of a possible four points.

The Cougars lost 6-2 in Prince Albert (Friday) and 4-3 in a shootout in Saskatoon (Saturday).

They play their next game Tuesday in Swift Current against the 35-12-3-1 Broncos, who have the second best record in the WHL.

The 18-24-4-4 Cougars are 13 points out of a playoff spot.

Saskatoon Blades             4    Prince George Cougars   3   (SO)

Max Gerlach of Saskatoon scored a power-play goal with 40 seconds left in the third and the Blades would go on to win in the sixth round of the shootout.

Ex-Cougar Kody McDonald opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal and added two assists.

McDonald completed the Gordie Howe hat-trick with a fight against Cameron MacPhee.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings won two of their three weekend road games against Mainland opponents, capped off with a 5-1 victory in Chilliwack.

Dustin Manz notched a third period hat-trick and Evan DeBrouwer made 31 saves as Chilliwack outshot Prince George 32-23.

The 25-15-4-4 Spruce Kings lead the Mainland Division by three points over Surrey, four over Langley and by nine over Chilliwack.

The Spruce Kings host Chilliwack Friday and Saturday.

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars whipped the South Island Royals 6-3 (Friday) and 8-3 (Saturday) in Victoria.

With 10 regular season games left, the 23-5-2-0 Major Midget Cougars are in second place, just a point behind the 23-4-2-1 Valley West Hawks.

The Hawks lost 3-2 in overtime (Sunday) against the Vancouver NW Giants.

Cariboo will visit the Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday at 5PM and Sunday at 10AM.

NHL:

Vancouver Canucks rookie Brock Boeser was named MVP at the 63rd NHL All-Star game in Tampa.

The 20-year-old Boeser scored a goal and added an assist to help the Pacific Division beat the Atlantic 5-2 in the championship game of a four-team divisional tournament played in a three-on-three format.

Boeser has 24 goals and 19 assists for 43 points in 46 games.

The 19-24-6 Canucks host Colorado Tuesday.

UPDATE at 1PM

It appears that Jaromir Jagr has played his last game in the NHL.

The Calgary Flames have assigned the 45-year-old Jagr to HC Kladno of the Czech Republic league.

Jagr notched just seven points (one goal) in 22 games with the Flames.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves wrapped up their regular season in Canada West basketball by taking three of four against Fraser Valley.

The UNBC men swept a pair while the Lady T-wolves split.

It appears both UNBC teams are headed to the playoffs after the men finished 10-10 (winning six of their last eight) and the women 9-11.

The Timberwolves get the bye this weekend when the other 16 teams conclude their regular season.

The Canada West playoffs begin February 9th.

SNOWBOARDCROSS:

Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George placed second among five Canadians and 10th out of 28 overall at the Bansko Sprint Snowboardcross World Cup race in Bulgaria.

The 20-year-old and the Snowboardcross team will compete in one last World Cup in Feldberg, Germany this weekend (February 2-4) before heading off to South Korea to compete in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

 

CANADIAN WOMEN’S CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS:

BC (Kesa Van Osch) is 1-2 in Pool B after a 9-6 loss Sunday night to PEI at the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton.

Newfoundland-Labrador and Alberta are both 3-0 in Pool B.

BC plays 1-2 Quebec (2PM) in its only game today.

 

AUSTRALIAN OPEN:

Roger Federer has his 6th Australian Open trophy and record 20th Grand Slam title.

The 36-year-old needed five sets to beat sixth-seeded Marin Cilic in the men’s final.

On the women’s side, Caroline Wozniacki captured her first major, edging Simona Halep 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in the championship match.

 

NBA:

The 33-15 Raptors are second in the Eastern Conference, just a game behind the 35-15 Boston Celtics.
