PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars have 18 games remaining, eight on the road and 10 at CN Centre, including three home games on the long weekend.

The Cougars host the Kamloops Blazers Friday and Saturday and the Red Deer Rebels Monday at 2.

The (19-27-4-4) Cougars, who are 13 points out of a playoff spot, sit six points behind the Blazers.


WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

BC DIVISION STANDINGS:

Kelowna, 52 games = 32-16-3-1 (68 points)
Victoria, 54 games = 32-18-3-1  (68 points)
Vancouver, 52 games = 28-16-5-3 (64 points)
Kamloops, 52 games = 24-24-1-3 (52 points)
Prince George, 54 games = 19-27-4-4 (46 points)

WESTERN CONFERENCE WILD CARD:

Spokane, 51 games = 27-19-3-2 (59 points)
Seattle, 51 games = 26-18-5-2 (59 points)
Kamloops, 52 games = 24-24-1-3 (52 points)

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings are closing in on their first ever division title in the BCHL.

With eight regular season games left, the Spruce Kings lead the Mainland Division by seven points over the Surrey Eagles and by eight over the Langley Rivermen.

The (27-15-4-4) Spruce Kings host the last place Coquitlam Express on Friday and Saturday.

 

BCHL:

After 15 years on the job, John Grisdale is stepping down as BCHL commissioner, effective June 1st of this year.

The league board of governors has begun a search process to find his successor.

MAINLAND DIVISION STANDINGS:

Prince George, 50 games = 27-15-4-4 (62 points)
Surrey, 49 games = 24-18-5-2 (55 points)
Langley, 50 games = 21-17-10-2 (54 points)
Chilliwack, 48 games = 22-20-3-3 (50 points)
Coquitlam, 50 games = 14-32-1-3 (32 points)

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars have their final home games of the regular season this weekend.

The Major Midget Cougars entertain the (8-18-0-4) Kootenay Ice Saturday afternoon at 4 and Sunday morning at 10 at Kin 1.

Kootenay is three points out of a playoff spot.

Cariboo will close with six road games.

The (24-5-3-0)  Cougars are in first place by two points over the (23-4-2-1) Valley West Hawks but Valley West has two games in hand.

 

NHL:

Connor McDavid with four goals and an assist. McDavid is tied for 3rd in league scoring with 61 points (21 goals), just five behind Nikita Kucherov of Tampa who leads with 66 (27 goals).

The (21-25-6) Vancouver Canucks begin a four game, six day road trip tonight in Florida against the (22-22-6) Panthers.

The Canucks, 13 points out of a playoff spot, also visit Tampa Bay Thursday, Carolina Friday and Dallas Sunday.

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves will have their season on the line Thursday (4 & 6PM PT) in Winnipeg against the Wesmen in Canada West men’s and women’s basketball playoff action.

The winner advances to the quarter-finals. The teams have not met this season.

Both the UNBC and Winnipeg men finished 10-10 while the Lady Timberwolves were 9-11 and the Winnipeg women ended up 14-6.

 

SNOWBOARDCROSS:

In her last competition before the Olympics, Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George placed 14th out of 30 in the Snowboardcross World Cup race Saturday and 9th in the Ladies’ Snowboard Cross Qualification Sunday in Feldberg, Germany.

The 20-year-old O’Dine is sixth and top Canadian in the World Cup standings.

She will participate at the Olympics in South Korea on Friday, Feb. 16th.

 

TRACK:

High Jumper Alyx Treasure of Prince George competed in three indoor international track meets over the past couple of weeks in Germany and the Czech Republic.

Her latest result with a sixth place finish out of eight with a leap of 1.89 metres in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The 25-year-old Treasure is now preparing for upcoming meets this month in Boston and Glasgow, Scotland.

She will represent Canada at the Commonwealth Games in April in Australia.

 

NBA:

The top two teams in the NBA Eastern Conference tip off tonight in Toronto with the Raptors home against the Boston Celtics.

The (36-16) Raptors are two games behind the (39-15) Celtics.

 

NFL:

The City of Philadelphia will host a parade on Thursday for the 2018 Super Bowl champion Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Eagles 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots was the least watched Super Bowl (an average of 103 million viewers on NBC, according to Nielsen) in nine years since the 2009 championship game.
