ICYMI: PG Iceman close to 500 racers ahead of 31st event

Prince George’s annual Iceman competition returns for its 31st run this weekend, but the public only has until midnight tonight to sign up.

The chilling multi-sport event currently has 480 racers signed up, nearly 40 as individuals and more than 430 in teams, sitting less than the 530-mark reached in 2017.

Once the winter storm disappears, spokesperson Jim Van Bakel says the long-range weather forecast is looking great for racers.

“Temperatures are predicted to be minus-five to minus-10 of highs; minus-15 or minus-16 as lows. That is much better than what it has been in the past; we’ve been dealing with some really warm temperatures the last three or four years, and then of course five years ago, we had had to cancel the whole thing because it was too cold.”

The event consists of running, cross-country skiing, long-track speed-skating, and indoor swimming.

Van Bakel competed in his first ever Iceman last year, and is hoping people can register just in time to match 2017’s total.

“This year, we’re expecting similar numbers from what we’ve seen by registrars already, which is a good thing. So last year, our total number of registrants for around 530 people, and includes people locally and from across the country.”

The Prince George Iceman starts Sunday, 10AM at the Otway Nordic Ski Club, ending at the Aquatic Centre.
