MMIWG National Inquiry wraps up in PG

There was a roller coaster of emotion taking place in Prince George over the last few days.

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls National Inquiry wrapped at the civic centre tonight, after three days, ending with drum performances, dancing, and dinner.

“Despite the weather conditions and the storm. Families came from all over the north and some families couldn’t make it, but despite the weather we still had 18 families show up,” says Community Relations Liaison Penny Kerrigan.

On Tuesday the inquiry took in statements from Highway of Tears victims’ family and friends, as well as survivors, as they shared their stories

This was the third time Francois Prince attended the inquiry, and says events like this can go along way.

“This big event was just a small portion of the work that needs to be done, that is being done. Meeting all of the people here, and seeing the amount of people that are coming through here, only expanded my understanding of how big this really is.”

Prince added he hopes some of the stories told and emotions felt through the three days will show that more work needs to be done.

All the discussions were confidential between MMIWQ and the families, and now the inquiry will take the statements back to be reviewed by the commissioners.
