Support services now available in PG for parents dealing with challenges of family life

The Family Day weekend is upon us and while many people will be focusing on the kids, some spotlight needs to be shed on the people who raise them.

Parenting Support Services of BC is providing an outlet for any Prince George parents who need someone to talk to.

A resource like this is especially vital following a recent life change.

“It’s really important for parents to get together, support one another and make connections especially if they are new or freshly divorced or separated and sometimes that supported is needed because sometimes you don’t have friends or someone you can talk to,” says Jessica Turner, PG Program Coordinator.

There are three types of circles available at the Hadih House including support groups for grandparents who are raising or are the primary caregivers to their grandkids.

“This is especially important for our grandparents raising grandchildren because they are in need of definite support and are in their situation because of trauma, estrangement with their children and there is actually twice as many grandparents raising grandchildren than what is currently in the foster system.”

“Sometimes family life isn’t happy-go-lucky, it’s stressful, it’s dealing with grief and it’s important to know that there are supports for people in those situations,” added Turner.

There is also a Family Unity Circle where parents connect twice a month for three hours and enjoy a nice cooked meal and talk about their families.

The facility is located at 2105 Pine Street and is inside the Carney Hill Neighbourhood Centre Society.
