The long weekend is here and many people may be hitting the roads to see family and friends.
People are being advised to be cautious if they plan on driving, after heavy snowfall swept through the north.
ICBC spokesperson Doug MacDonald says it’s all about being prepared.
“make sure you have a first aid kit, you do have emergency rations in your vehicle, extra clothing in case it gets cold. If you are going to be travelling in winter conditions it’s a good idea to have chains in your vehicle, as well, to make sure if you do get stuck in one place you can get yourself out.”

“what we try to do with all long weekends, whether in the winter months or summer months, is trying and get as much enjoyment out of them as possible,” adds MacDonald. “That sometimes means going over the speed limit, travelling to fast for road conditions. As we can see right now by the amount of snow we’ve had, here in the north, driving to fast in these road conditions is just going to cause a crash.”
MacDonald says to use your instincts if you’re choosing to go out and evaluate if it’s safe to travel.
