Indigenous people and members of the public march downtown PG

Over 50 people braved the cold to take part in the 5th Annual Women’s Memorial March.

Members of the public who showed up walked from the Court House to the PG Native Friendship Centre in memory of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

BC Federation of Students Ken Solonas organized the event and says lots of people are starting to rally behind it.

“Everybody understand the challenges that we have moving forward, especially with Highway 16, the Highway of Tears. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done to ensure the safety of our women and girls.”

Solonas hopes this event shows the need for more to be done when it comes to strengthening our policies and laws to help the indigenous community.

“Last week was a fine example on the ruling of Gerald Stanley, being acquitted from any charges, so, that is just one example of what has been repeatedly happening to our people for generations.”

Stanley, 56, was recently found not guilty with second-degree murder in the death of Colten Boushie, 22, in Saskatchewan.

A rally was held in front of the Prince George courthouse Monday to demand change and bring awareness to the flaws in the Canadian judicial system.
