PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Kelowna Rockets   6  Prince George Cougars  5

It was the 11th consecutive game that the Cougars have failed to score the first goal.

The Rockets led 3-0 just 5:35 into the game and enjoyed period leads of 4-2 and 6-2.

Vladislav Mikhalchuk, Jared Bethune, and Jackson Leppard all notched a goal and an assist for the Cougars, who have lost nine straight to the Rockets, including all five match-ups this season.

Rhett Rhinehart, with his first WHL goal, and Ryan Schoettler also tallied for the Cougars, who have lost 12 of their last 15 games.

The (20-31-4-4) Cougars, visit Spokane on Friday and Tri-City Saturday before hosting Kelowna on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Prince George, with just 13 games remaining, began its four game road trip with a 7-6 shootout victory in Kamloops.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings have three regular season games remaining; Friday and Saturday in Chillwack and Sunday in Langley.

The (30-17-4-4) Spruce Kings, who have clinched first, will start the best of seven first round playoff series at home on March 2nd and 3rd against the fourth place team in the Mainland Division, either Surrey, Chilliwack, or Langley.

Fans 19 and over who purchase tickets for both Games 1 and 2 at the Spruce Kings office Monday to Friday, 12PM to 4PM will be entered into a draw for a Mega 50/50 Lottery Ticket as part of the Spruce Kings Show Home.

Ticket Prices for the entire playoffs will be $15 for Adults, and $12 for Students/Seniors.

Fans who purchase both Game One and Two tickets however, will get the package for $20.

CARIBOO COUGARS: 

The (27-6-3-0) Cariboo Cougars have four regular season games left, and all are on the road.

The Major Midget Cougars play Saturday (8:45AM at UBC) and Sunday (9AM in Burnaby) against the (17-14-2-1) Vancouver NW Giants and close on March 10th (3PM) and 11th (10AM) against the Rockets in Kelowna.

Cariboo is tied for first place with the (27-4-2-1) Valley West Hawks in the BCMMML, but the Hawks have two games in hand.

 

NHL:

Nathan MacKinnon scored Colorado’s fifth power-play goal of the game at 3:36 of overtime.

MacKinnon (1G, 3A) and Tyson Barrie (1G, 4A) combined for nine points for the Avalanche, who erased a 4-1 second period deficit.

Prior to the game, the (23-30-7) signed pending unrestricted free agent Erik Gudbranson to a three-year, $12 million contract extension.

OLYMPICS:

Canadian Brady Leman of Calgary won gold in men’s ski cross at the PyeongChang, South Korea 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

It’s the ninth gold for Canada at the Games.

It was also Canada’s first-ever men’s Olympic ski cross medal.

Kaillie Humphries and Phylicia George of Canada captured bronze in the women’s bobsleigh.

Humphries won gold at each of the previous two Winter Olympics.

Canadian athletes have 21 medals after Wednesday’s competition: nine gold, five silver and seven bronze.

Canada beat Finland 1-0 in the men’s hockey quarter-finals.

In the other hockey quarters: Czech Republic beat the USA 3-2 in a shootout, Germany got by Sweden 4-3 in overtime and the athletes from Russia whipped Norway 6-1.

The semis have Canada against Germany Friday morning at 4:10 (PT) and the Czechs vs. the Russians
Thursday night at 11:40 (PT).

The gold medal game in women’s hockey features Canada against the USA tonight (8:10PM PT).

Kevin Koe of Canada beat Denmark 8-3 in men’s curling to finish second in the round robin with a 6-3 record.

Koe will play the third place Americans in the semi-finals Thursday at 3:05am (PT).

Rachel Homan of Canada was eliminated from medal contention in women’s curling after a 6-5 loss to Great Britain.

Homan finished with a 4-5 record after winning her last game 9-8 over the Olympic athletes from Russia.

It is the first time, a Canadian women’s team will not medal since curling made its return to the Winter Olympics in 1998.

The women’s 4x6km Biathlon Relay will take place on Thursday at 3:05am (PT).

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George finished 29th out of 87 athletes in the women’s Biathlon 15-km individual race on February 15th.

It was the first Olympic competition for the 23-year-old Duchess Park grad, who replaced Megan Tandy of PG, who has been under the weather with a fever.

The 29-year-old Tandy was 57th out of 87 in the 7.5-km Sprint on February 10th.

Jamie Macdonald of Fort St. James was one of five members of the Canadian women’s short track 3000m relay team that failed to earn a medal.

Canada and China were disqualified after a massive collision during the finals of the event.

The 23-year-old Macdonald did not race in the final but did compete in Heat One on February 10th where Canada placed second to qualify for the final.

Canada captured silver in the women’s 3000-metre relay in the three prior Olympics.

Macdonald participated in one individual race and that ended with a crash on February 10th in the women’s 500 metres preliminary.

A minor concussion suffered in training prevented Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George from competing in the women’s snowboard cross on February 15th.

 

CANADA WEST BASKETBALL:

Kayla Gordon of Prince George is the Canada West women’s third star of the week after leading the TWU Spartans to a pair of basketball wins over Alberta in quarter-finals.

The five-foot-11 Gordon averaged 18.5 points and eight rebounds per game in the Spartans 62-53 and 70-64 victories.

The Cedars Christian grad shot a team-leading 54.2 per cent in the sweep.

TWU will visit Saskatchewan in a best of three semi-final series that begins Thursday in Saskatoon.

The other semi has Calgary at Regina.

The Canada West men’s basketball semi-finals have Lethbridge at Alberta and UBC at Calgary.

The Alberta men beat the UNBC Timberwolves 98-64 and 80-41 in Edmonton.
