PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Prince George Cougars  7  Kelowna Rockets  6

Ilijah Colina scored on the power-play, his second goal of the game with 18.3 seconds left, to give the Cougars the victory and a sweep of the BC Division leaders.

The Cougars trailed 3-0 in the first, 4-1 in the second and 5-4 in the third but also held a brief 6-5 lead before 2,545 fans at the CN Centre.

The Rockets leading scorer, Kole Lind, a 2017 second round pick of the Vancouver Canucks, had a natural hat-trick in the first period and added an assist.

13 different Cougars picked up at least one point.

It was the first time since early December the Cougars have won two straight games.

The (22-33-4-4) Cougars host the Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday.

Cougars scored late in the first to tie the game, and then added three unanswered goals in the second before 2,273 hometown fans.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

With just two penalty minutes in 53 games, forward Ben Poisson of the Prince George Spruce Kings has been voted the BCHL’s Most Sportsmanlike player.

The 18-year-old Poisson, who is out with a season ending injury (ruptured spleen), was the team’s third leading scorer with 51 points (22 goals) in 53 games.

The Spruce Kings host the Chilliwack Chiefs Friday and Saturday to begin their Mainland Division semi-final.

The best-of-seven series will shift to Chilliwack for games three and four on Monday and Tuesday.

The Spruce Kings had seven wins and a tie in eight meetings against the Chiefs in the regular season.

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars will conclude their regular season on March 10th (3PM) and 11th (10AM) in Kelowna against the Okanagan Rockets.

The (29-6-3-0Major Midget Cougars get the bye this weekend.

Cariboo Cougars has a two point lead over the second place Valley West Hawks, but Valley West has two games in hand.

The (28-5-2-1) Hawks host last place South Island Saturday (6:30PM) and Sunday (12:45PM) in Surrey before wrapping up at 10th place North Island March 10th and 11th in Nanaimo.

 

NHL:

NY Rangers  6  Vancouver  5  (OT)

John Gilmour scored his first NHL goal from a sharp angle 1:22 into overtime.

Henrik Lundqvist made a season-high 50 saves for the Rangers.

Vancouver Rookie Brock Boeser tied the game 5-5 when he scored his second goal of the night and 29th of the season with  45.9 seconds left in the third period

The (24-32-8) Canucks host Nashville Friday. The Predators play in Edmonton tonight.

The 2019 NHL draft will be held in Vancouver.

The draft will be part of the Canucks’ 50th anniversary celebration.

Duchess Park advances to the quarter-finals today (3:30PM) against #3 G.W. Graham.

Smithers drops down to the consolation in the 16-team tournament and will play St. Michaels today (10:30AM).

 

BC JUNIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL PROVINCIALS:

Duchess will play on the consolation side of the 24-team tournament and meet St. John Brebeuf today (4PM).

CANADA WEST BASKETBALL:

The medal games will be played this week in Canada West basketball.

On the women’s side, the Regina Cougars host the Saskatchewan Huskies for the gold medal on Friday.

The Trinity Western Spartans are home against the Calgary Dinos in the bronze medal game on Saturday.

Regina, Saskatchewan and the TWU-Calgary winner will all advance to the Nationals.

Cedars Christian grad Kayla Gordon of Trinity Western is in her senior year.

Gordon is a third-team all-star and the Spartans all-time leading scorer.

On the men’s side, the Calgary Dinos visit the top-ranked Alberta Golden Bears in the championship game Saturday night.

The Alberta men whipped the UNBC Timberwolves 98-64 and 80-41 in the quarter-finals in Edmonton.
