PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Kamloops Blazers  6  Prince George Cougars  5  (Shootout Saturday)

Brogan O’Brien scored the first goal and the last goal in regulation, and added an assist, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Cougars to victory in his final WHL game.

The Blazers scored five times in the middle period and won the shootout 2-0 before 5,106 fans, the second largest crowd of the season at CN Centre.

Jared Bethune had two assists while Aaron Boyd did not pick up a point in their last game in a Prince George uniform.

Connor Bowie, Reid Perepeluk and Cameron MacPhee tallied once for the Cougars, who were outshot 36-34.

Rookie Connor Zary notched two goals and an assist plus the shootout winner for the Blazers.

The Cougars finish their season 24-38-5-5 for 58 points and 21st out of 22 in the overall WHL standings.

Isaiah DiLaura made 51 saves for the Cougars who ended a six-game losing streak.

Max Kryski scored twice while defencemen Rhett Rhinehart and Austin Crossley also tallied for PG.

The best-of-seven BCHL Mainland Division final is tied 1-1.

Mario Cavaliere made 46 saves as the Spruce Kings outshot the Eagles 48-19 before 1,311 fans at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

Games Three and Four shift to Surrey on Monday and Tuesday.

Liam Watson-Brawn notched two goals and two assists, while Sam Anzai and Kyle Johnson also scored twice for the Spruce Kings, who outshot the Eagles 51-15 before 1,532 fans.

MINOR HOCKEY:

The Prince George Minor Hockey Association (PGMHA) will host the BC Hockey PeeWee Tier 1 Provincial Championship at Kin 1.

The six-team tournament will begin Monday with the final Thursday night at 7:30.

The host PG Viking Construction Cougars play their first game Monday morning at 10:30 against Kamloops.

Meanwhile, Prince George Minor Hockey rep teams also compete at the PeeWee Tier 2 (starting today in North Shore), PeeWee Tier 3 (beginning Monday in Summerland), PeeWee Female (starting Thursday in Dawson Creek) Bantam Tier 1 (beginning Monday in Nanaimo), Bantam Tier 2 (starting today at Hollyburn on Lower Mainland), Bantam Female (beginning Wednesday in Vancouver), Midget Tier 1 (starting Monday in Fort St. John), and Midget Tier 2 (beginning today in Quesnel) championships.

 

BIATHLON:

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George was part of the Canadian team that placed 11th out of 22 in the women’s 4×6-kilometre Relay race at the IBU Biathlon World Cup in Oslo, Norway.

This was the last World Cup competition of the season for the 23-year-old Beaudry, who did not qualify for the 10-kilometre Pursuit after an 84th place finish out of 97 athletes in the 7.5-kilometre Sprint.

 

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL:

Team BC, which includes Joel Ewert of Prince George, is 2-3 and out of medal contention at the Junior National wheelchair basketball championships in Longeuil, Quebec.

On Friday, BC lost 52-35 to Alberta and 61-46 to Saskatchewan before coming back with a 53-9 victory over Nova Scotia.

On Saturday, BC lost 52-39 to Ontario before posting a 55-15 triumph over Manitoba.

Today, BC plays its last game against 2-3 New Brunswick.

 

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors put a franchise record tying 11-game win streak on the line when they host the (42-29) OKC Thunder today in the NBA.

The (52-17) Raptors lead the Eastern Conference by five games over the (47-22) Boston Celtics.

 

CURLING:

Canada is 2-0 after the first day of the Ford world women’s curling championship in North Bay, Ontario.

The Jennifer Jones rink from Winnipeg beat the Czech Republic 11-5 and Switzerland 10-5.

 

PGA TOUR:

Henrik Stenson, at 12-under-204, has a one shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau entering the fourth round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Rory McIlroy is two shots off the pace at 10-under.

Tiger Woods trails by five at seven-under (-7), after a third round three-under-69 (-3).
