Freedom of speech to be tackled at “open mic” session in PG

A series of “open mic” discussions are being organized by the Stand Up to the North Committee in Prince George.

It begins tonight from the Hospitals Employees Union Office on 3rd Avenue at 5:00 PM.

The first meeting will touch on Freedom of Speech and conscience as a human right, which is considered under attack from several sources.

“The federal government is talking about there being a danger of cyberwarfare from foreign sources and we think the way the government is going ahead with this could affect fundamental human rights,” says Peter Ewart, Organizer.

“Internet providers, like Facebook, Youtube, and Google are collaborating with the CIA and other intelligence agencies to monitor, restrict or ban individuals and organizations from presenting political views online.”

He adds Freedom of speech is key for us in Prince George due to the variety of issues in the north.

“It affects a whole number of issues for us, there are all sorts of issues that face northerners in various ways and sometimes the issues are controversial and what is necessary is that we have a full and free discussion on these things.”

The format for the meetings will be a short presentation on the topic followed by an “open mic” where everyone will have the opportunity to speak, no matter their point of view or political persuasion.
