Prince George says goodbye to snowy winter, hello to wet and cool spring

Spring has officially sprung in Prince George thanks to the recent warmup in temperatures we’ve been seeing.

The snow has been melting at a rapid rate over the past couple weeks following an ugly February.

“We were the third coldest February on record with our records dating back to 1943 and in terms of precipitation we came in at one hundred and seventy percent of normal, so that was wetter than normal and the rank was only sixteenth,” says Lisa West, Environment Canada Meteorologist.

The northern capital saw anywhere between 54 and 99 millimetres of precipitation between December and March.

The same could also be said in places like Vanderhoof and the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District.

However, the final amounts vary depending on where you live according to Environment Canada Meteorologist Lisa West.

“Vanderhoof came in at 147 centimetres of snow, Houston was more along the lines of 60 centimetres.”

The spring season is expected to be wetter and colder than normal but those predictions do not include the day-to-day weather.

In other words, you might want to hang on to that warm sweater of yours just a little bit longer.

“The climate models are suggesting La Nina conditions to continue into spring, which tends to bring colder and wetter than average conditions, however, this doesn’t pick up the day-to-day weather conditions,” adds West.

The daily forecast is predicted between plus two and plus nine degrees Celsius the rest of the work week.
