PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Eagles lead the best-of-seven BCHL Mainland Division final 3-2.

Captain Kyle Johnson led the way with a goal and two assists before 1,348 fans at the RMCA.

The Spruce Kings outshot the Eagles 37-19.

In the three games in PG, the shots are 136-53 in favor of Prince George.

Game Six will be played Saturday in South Surrey.

The Spruce Kings are 0-6 this season in South Surrey, including 0-2 in this series, where they have been outscored 9-1 on the larger ice surface.

Should a seventh game be needed, it would be played Sunday night in Prince George.

Game two in the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-finals series will be played Saturday in Kelowna.

Six WHL best-of-seven first round series will start tonight: Vancouver at Victoria and Seattle at Everett in the West plus Prince Albert at Moose Jaw, Regina at Swift Current, Red Deer at Lethbridge, and Brandon at Medicine Hat in the East.

The other best-of-seven Conference quarter-final will begin on Saturday with Spokane at Portland.

The Prince George Cougars will pick 9th and 21st in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft May 3rd in Red Deer.

The Prince Albert Raiders have the third overall pick which was acquired in a 2016 trade with Prince George.

The Cougars acquired their two first round picks in trades this year with Prince Albert and Swift Current.

The Edmonton Oil Kings have the first overall selection followed by the Kootenay Ice.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

It’s semi-final weekend in the BCMML.

The defending champion Cariboo Cougars host the Vancouver NE Chiefs tonight at 6PM, Saturday at 4PM, and if needed, Sunday morning at 10 in the best of three series at Kin 1.

In four regular season meetings, Cariboo posted three wins and a tie against the eighth place Chiefs.

The other series has the Vancouver NW Giants at the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in Langley (tonight and Saturday night at 7 and Sunday afternoon, if necessary, at 2.)

Winners meet in the championship series beginning on March 30th.

 

MINOR HOCKEY:

The host Prince George Viking Construction Cougars finished fifth out of six with a 1-4 record at the BC Hockey PeeWee Tier 1 Provincial Championship.

Prince George won its last round robin game 4-3 over Kelowna Thursday afternoon at Kin 1.

Burnaby captured gold with a 5-2 triumph over Victoria in the final.

(PG lost its first four games: 6-2 to Kamloops, 9-2 to Semiahmoo, 9-1 to Burnaby and 2-0 to Victoria)

Several Prince George Minor Hockey rep teams are competing out-of-town this week at Provincials.

  • PG finished first in the seven team round robin with a 4-0-2 record and will play in the final tonight at 7:30 against Vancouver at Midget Tier 1 in Fort St. John (3-3 tie vs. Vancouver, 5-4 win over North East, 4-3 win over East Kootenay, 4-2 win over Burnaby, 7-2 win over Kelowna, 4-4 tie against Saanich)
  • PG earned silver at Midget Tier 2 in Quesnel, dropping the Thursday night final to Quesnel 4-2. Both teams advanced to the championship game after finishing the seven team round robin with a record of 4-1-1. (PG round robin results: 7-4 loss to Cowichan; 6-1 win over Coquitlam, 2-2 tie vs. Quesnel, 5-3 win over Port Moody & 10-1 win over Fort St. John & 5-3 win over Kamloops).
  • PG captured silver at Bantam Tier 1 in Nanaimo, falling 3-0 to Seafair in the gold medal game (PG went 2-1-1 in the round robin of the eight-team tournament: 1-1 tie vs. Victoria, 3-1 win over Yukon, 4-1 loss to Seafair and 6-0 win over Nanaimo).

The win ended the (26-39-9) Canucks seven-game losing streak.

Vancouver, with eight games left, continues a four-game road trip tonight in St. Louis.

The (40-28-5) Blues are three points out of a wild-card playoff spot.

The Canucks are tied with Arizona for 29th in the overall standings, three points ahead of last place Buffalo.

BIATHLON:

Caledonia Nordic Ski Club member Sarah Beaudry of Prince George earned the bronze medal Thursday in the women’s 12.5 km pursuit at the Canadian biathlon championships in Charlo, New Brunswick.

The 24-year-old Beaudry, on Wednesday, placed fourth in the women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint.

Emily Dickson of Burns Lake captured her second medal with a bronze in the junior women’s 12.5-kilometre  pursuit.

The 20-year-old Dickson earlier got silver in the junior women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint.

Cole Bender, 16, of Burns Lake has a pair of gold, after winning the senior boys 7.5-kilometre pursuit Thursday and the 6-kilometre sprint on Wednesday.

 

CURLING:

Canada is 11-0, wrapping up the top seed for the semi-finals Saturday, at the Ford world women’s curling championship in North Bay, Ontario.

The Jennifer Jones rink from Winnipeg, who beat Italy 14-6 Thursday night and Japan 8-5 this morning, wrap up the round robin tonight against the USA.

 

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors, with just 10 regular season games left, host the (23-49) Brooklyn Nets tonight.

The (53-19) Raptors lead the Eastern Conference by 4 1/2 games over the (48-23) Boston Celtics.
