Elders Citizens Association disagrees with recent active seniors survey

A StatsCanada survey suggests seniors across the country have become less active over the last 30 years.

This includes a 12% increase in unpaid household work, which includes meal prep, and indoor or outdoor cleaning, and using the rest of their day sitting and watching television.

According to more of its data, ranging from 1986 to 2015, senior women in Canada have spent 40 less minutes engaged in physical activity, and 35 minutes less for men.

However, Elder Citizens Recreation Association Manager Lisa McGhee doesn’t believe this is an issue in Prince George.

“At our centre, our membership has grown! Our membership last year, there was close to 900 people. For 2018, out of our renewal, which is typically over 700 people, over 200 of those are new memberships here.”

She explains the participants at the centre organize their own activities from a variety of options.

“We have a yoga program, we have a tai-chi program; I have floor curling and carpet bowling, and we also have a stroke recovery group. So there are lots of different activities to do.”

McGhee believes this helps local seniors a great deal when developing a proper physical regime.

While the main source for the Association is to provide lunches, seniors are always encouraged, in addition to healthy eating, to live an active lifestyle.
