Policy changes see catchment trumping sibling priority

A decision by School District 57 will see students living in catchment get priority when registering for school.

At last night’s meeting, trustees voted 5-1 to have students living in catchment get priority over siblings going to the same school.

Trustee Kate Cooke says it will now go catchment and then sibling priority.

“So in choice schools its sibling priority over catchment because catchment is the entire school district,” says Cooke, “but siblings always get priority in those schools, but now catchment in a regular program, catchment always trumps sibling priority.”

Cooke was the only trustee who voted not in favour of this move.

She feels it runs the risk of splitting up families.
