Big Brothers Big Sisters Prince George broke a record by raising over $26,000 during their Pink Shirt Campaign.
The money collected also included over $7,000 from shirts sold at PG Save on Food Locations.The grocery store presented a cheque to the organization today.
Darbi Brand, Community Development Manager, says this years message of spreading kindness resonated with members of the community.
“We feel it is important for all our programs and all our endeavours to make sure we are showing children and youth and community members that kindness is easy and that you don’t have to work hard to be kind. Just like you don’t have to work hard to be a mentor.”
Spruceland Save on Foods Store Manager, Brian Gandy, says the company decided to get involved when they were approached by people asking if they had any pink shirts.
“It started a few years back when it was getting big in the Lower Mainland.”
“The only way we were going to be able to get on board was if we came up with an organization to support. We decided to contact Tim Bennett of Big Brothers Big Sisters, because we worked well with them in the past, and decided to see if he was on board and be a part of this.”
Gandy added, every year the orders for shirts grows and they are hoping to raise as much, or even more, when the event takes place again next year.
All proceeds will help the organization match children and youth living in Prince George with a mentor.
