City fields to open two weeks later than in earlier years

The City estimates it will be mid-May before sports fields and ball diamonds open to the public.

City officials are asking residents to refrain from using any of the fields, so crews can start working on recovering parks after the long winter we’ve experienced.

“The snowpack we had this year helps protects the field,” says Chris Bjorn, Parks Supervisor. “The last few years, before this, they were more thawing and freezing and that actually can damage the fields in the winter time.”

“We’re just waiting for the root growth to start and the fields to be healthy before we let people on. If we let people on too early it’s going to damage the field and it will take months to repair.”

The City spends $4.5 million for maintenance on parks around PG, with a component of that going to sports fields and neighbourhood parks.

Connaught Hill and park won’t be opened to vehicles until roads in the park are free. The City expects gates to be open late April or early May. Pine Valley Gold Course is set to open Monday, if weather cooperates.
