PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

Wenatchee wins the Fred Page Cup 4-1 to become the first American based team to capture the BCHL title since the 1979 Bellingham Blazers.

It was just the third season in the league for the Wild.

The Spruce Kings were held to eight shots on Austin Park, including just one in the final period.

Evan DeBrouwer had another strong game in the PG net, blocking 34 of 36.

DeBrouwer finished with the second-best goals-against-average (GAA) in the playoffs at 2.12 and also had a splendid save-percentage (SV%) at 0.925.

Zak Galambos scored a pair of power play goals, at 2:50 of the first period and the insurance marker at 6:19 of the third.

AJ Vanderbeck added an empty netter with 2:15 left in the game.

The Wild went 2/7 with the man advantage while the Spruce Kings were 0/3.

Wenatchee improved to 11-0 at home in the playoffs, outscoring the opposition 51-18.

The Spruce Kings finish the playoffs 3-8 on the road and 10-3 at home.

They were 5-0 when facing elimination prior to their last game.

Wenatchee advances to the Doyle Cup starting Friday, April 27th against the winner of the AJHL, either the Spruce Grove Saints or the Okotoks Oilers.

The Doyle Cup winner will qualify for the RBC National Junior ‘A’ Championship May 12th to 20th in Chilliwack.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

The best-of-seven WHL Conference Finals open tonight.

In the West, the Tri-City Americans visit the Everett Silvertips, and in the East, it’s the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Swift Current Broncos.

The Americans swept both Kelowna and Victoria while Everett needed just five games to eliminate Seattle and Portland.

The Hurricanes won each of their first two series over Red Deer and Brandon in five games, while the Broncos had to go the full seven games to knock out Regina and Moose Jaw.

Lethbridge sniper Brad Morrison of Prince George tops the WHL playoff scoring race with 29 points (12G, 17A) in just 10 post-season games.

Morgan Geekie (15 goals) and Michael Rasmussen (10 goals) of Tri-City each have 24 points in eight playoff games.

There are three Friday night playoff games in the NHL: Minnesota at Winnipeg (4:30), Philadelphia at Pittsburgh (4:00), and Colorado at Nashville (6:30).

The visiting teams are all facing elimination with the Jets, Penguins, and Predators ahead 3-1.

With Jonathan Bernier injured, the Avalanche will start third-stringer Andrew Hammond in net.

The three finalists for the NHL Norris Trophy are Drew Doughty (LA), Victor Hedman (Tampa), and P.K. Subban (Nashville).

The winner will be announced June 20th in Las Vegas during NHL Awards Show.

JUDO-SWIM:

Swimming and Judo are featured this weekend in Prince George.

Competition begins tonight in the PG Barracudas “Moose” Dental swim meet and the Prince George Judo open tournament.

The swimming wraps up Sunday afternoon, while the judo concludes Saturday afternoon.

The Raptors lead 2-0.

MLB:

The loss ended a four-game win streak for the 12-6 Blue Jays.

 

NFL:

The 2018 NFL regular season schedule is out.

The Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles will host the Atlanta Falcons in the opener on Thursday night, September 6th.

The Eagles also will play at Wembley Stadium in England against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 8, which is one of four international games.
